Lucas' Lighthouse: An Illuminating Wish

Type:  Wish Stories

Peering out of his lighthouse’s window 18 feet up, Lucas feels on top of the world. His wish for a lighthouse play structure has come true!

This energetic 12-year-old wished for a space where he and his brother can share in peace, quiet, and daydreams. The idea of a fort to call his own was especially appealing to Lucas, whose life-threatening illness has left him with many things that are out of his control.

On the day of his lighthouse’s arrival, Lucas was ecstatic. As the trailer backed up into his yard, he caught his first glimpse of the towering fort, painted with orange and white stripes at his request. He jumped right in to help unload the truck and dig up a bush to accommodate the accompanying swing set. Even before the final touches had been put on the structure, Lucas and his brother were inside, sweeping and arranging carefully chosen belongings. In came comfortable chairs, sleeping bags, a lantern, and hand-drawn signs listing the fort’s rules. With the ground floor and two tiers above, the structure offers plenty of space for Lucas and his family and friends to enjoy.

The lighthouse arrived just ahead of Lucas’ thirteenth birthday and in time to enjoy some use before the New England winter arrives. Lucas looks forward to sleepovers in his fort next spring and plans to use the lighthouse’s flower box to hide his snowballs this winter. Though the lighthouse
does not have a beam of its own, it will always be illuminated with Lucas’ bright, shining smile!
