Room for the Future: Kate's Bedroom Makeover Wish

Home is a haven, and for nine-year-old Kate from Boston, her wish made home even more special. During her treatment for acute lymphoblastic leukemia, Kate would often curl up in her bedroom to rest after returning from medical appointments. Her room was comfortable but, as a third grader, Kate felt she had outgrown its pink décor. She began imagining a more grown-up color scheme and a layout that would provide space for hosting sleepovers.

 

When Kate learned she would have the opportunity to have a wish granted through the Make-A-Wish Foundation® of Massachusetts and Rhode Island, she thought about her ideas for her room and soon decided upon the perfect wish. As a fan of HGTV, Kate had watched designer Genevieve Gordor transform rooms on her show, Dear Genevieve. Kate knew she would be the ideal person to help reinvent her space, so she wished for a bedroom makeover from Genevieve!

 

On her wish day, Kate could hardly believe it was really 

Genevieve who arrived at her front door. The two toured her bedroom and chatted about Kate’s overall vision, then headed to her favorite café. Over lunch, the pair continued their planning and shared plenty of giggles! Next, it was off to shop for accessories together and then, it was time for Kate to say goodbye and let the rest of her wish unfold as she awaited her room’s reveal.

 

 

When Genevieve ushered Kate into her new bedroom for the first time, she was elated! Finally, she had a room that truly reflected her personality. A new loft bed with an extra bed underneath and a snack bar stocked with treats would make sleepovers even sweeter. And, a colorful rug, chair, and accessories added fun elements throughout the space.

 

For Kate, who has completed a two-year treatment cycle for her leukemia, her bedroom makeover wish came at the perfect time. “It’s a great new beginning for her,” commented Kate’s parents as she proudly showed them her room. Through her wish, this growing girl now has room to dream and confidently envision her future as she joyfully embraces the present!
